Modern urban planning has been shaped by an unsustainable car-centric vision, which created a carbon lock-in of our mobility systems, causing societal health and socio-economic issues. Historically, quantitative methods targeting mobility networks focused on improving motorized traffic flow, leaving a gap in addressing challenges faced by other modes of transport and alternative objectives relating to accessibility and justice. In this presentation, I will show how network science and other computational methods can be leveraged to promote walking and cycling in cities. First, by the fundamental study of mobility networks to develop new methods, focused on retrofitting the current street network. Then, by the application of those emerging computational tools to real use cases, collaborating with stakeholders inside and outside of academia.

About the speaker
Clément Sebastiao is a PhD Student at the IT University of Copenhagen, in the Networks, Data, and Society (NERDS) group. Inspired by mobility justice and complex systems theory, his research focuses on applying network science and geospatial data science to analyze urban mobility. He is a member of the EU Horizon project "Just Streets". Prior to his PhD, he studied Physics and Complex Systems at ENS Lyon.
