Urban informatics is an emerging interdisciplinary field that leverages modern digital data and technology to reveal the behavioral and social dynamics. It has only been limited integrated, however, with the rapidly advancing methodological and theoretical tools being generated by network scientists, especially for inquiries regarding the social (in contrast to the physical) systems of the city. I will summarize some of the recent work in urban informatics that is ongoing in Boston, including the efforts of the Boston Area Research Initiative, and to propose a few thematic areas that describe potential intersections with network science. My hope is that this will stimulate an active discussion for new directions and collaborations between BARI and members of the Network Science Institute.
